Understanding Minor Cannabinoids: CBN

CBN a minor cannaboid

When people think of cannabinoids, they usually think of THC and CBD. But those aren’t the only compounds that are produced by the plant, and each one has unique effects. One lesser-known compound is cannabinol, also known as CBN. Although considered a “minor” compound when compared to THC or CBD, it still has several medicinal effects unique to cannabis.  While they are both minor cannabinoids, what is the difference CBN and CBD?

Here’s what you need to know about CBN in cannabis.

What is CBN and what does it do?

According to Leafly, CBN is a non-intoxicating compound created when cannabis ages. While some are put off by the idea of using old cannabis, others seek it out based on the effects alone.

While there are few studies on CBN right now, those that were done show several physical benefits. Products with CBN may be used as an antibacterial and appetite stimulant. It has also been shown to treat conditions like glaucoma and arthritis.

CBN has been shown to have certain preventative properties. One study suggested that it might be helpful in fighting neurodegenerative conditions like ALS.

Some believe that CBN has a sedative effect, but some studies have also shown that this is not true. Rather, other factors of the aging process might be at play when it comes to seeing this effect in certain CBN products. CBN can also sedate when combined with THC, even if not on its own.

What is the difference between CBN and CBD?

Because both CBN and CBD are non intoxicating, some are confused about the difference. Weedmaps explains that, while both are cannabinoids, they are distinct chemical compounds with distinctive properties.

CBD is produced directly by the cannabis plant, so it occurs frequently. CBN is a bit more rare since it is produced as THC oxidizes. This makes CBN a bit more expensive, as it is harder to isolate.

While CBN does not get you high on its own, when combined with THC, it has produced a more sedated, calm high than CBD combined with THC.

What products focus on CBN?

While more rare than other products, there are several products that Wayne Releaf carries with CBN. These include:
